COMMEMORATING THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CIVIL WAR WITH

THE FINEST ORIGINAL SOLDIER'S LETTERS AND ARTIFACTS
Occupied Winchester, Va. - Rations for the 18th Connecticut Volunteers

This “Farmer’s Bank of Virginia” check has been “confiscated” by the federal forces occupying Winchester, Virginia and used as a vehicle for obtaining rations.  The check is dated “June 8th, 1863 – Spangler”.  The Lieutenant and A. C. S. in charge of dispersing the rations of bread has written:

“Pay to: 18th Conn. Vols.

Fifteen-hundred & twenty-seven

Rations bread

B. F. Stivers A. C. S.”

This “check” is in excellent condition and is from one of the most interesting cities in all of the south.  According to Wikipedia, “Historians claim that Winchester changed hands as many as 72 times, and 13 times in one day”!  The signer of the check served in the 9th West Virginia Infantry and was probably placed in the Commissary Department after being released as a P.O.W.
