Civil War Navy Document Signed by Both Gideon Welles, Security of the Navy & Rear Admiral Hiram Paulding
This document appoints Oliver Swain, a resident of Fairhaven, Mass. to the position of Ensign. He is to report to Rear Admiral Paulding at New York for instruction in gunnery. The document is also signed by Commandant S. H. Stringham. Swain would serve on the U.S.S. Savannah and then the U.S.S. Banshee in the Potomac Flotilla.
