Wayne Co. Pennsylvania: Draft Notice - Substitute Furnished -
Substitute Deserts! - An Amazing Set of Documents!
Offered is a set of 3 documents from the town of Honesdale, Wayne County, Pennsylvania. These 3 forms are GREAT!
The first form notifies that David S. Mitchell that as a citizen of the township of Damascus, he is liable for military service. This form is dated August 28th, 1862 and is printed on blue paper. This form is signed by the United State Deputy Marshall.
The second form notifies David S. Mitchell that he has been drafted. It is signed by the Wayne County Commissioner. At the bottom of this 4 inch by 6 inch document is printed:
“It is recommended to all persons drafted or who may volunteer, to bring
with them a good, stout woolen blanket, for which they will be duly credited by
the Government. The Military blanket now in use is 84 by 66 inches.”
The third form is headed, “Camp Philadelphia, November 24th, 1862” and states that David S. Mitchell “who was drafted on the 16th of October 1862 from the township of Damascus and county of Wayne, Pennsylvania having furnished a substitute, one Henry Duncun who has enlisted in a regiment Roberts Artillery for three years or during the war, in the service of the United States, is hereby released from said service.” This document is signed by Colonel Lumuel Todd, Recruiting Officer.
When you look up Henry Duncun on the Civil War Database, you see that he enlisted on 11/22/62 and deserted 5 days later on the 27th!
These three little documents definitely tell a colorful story of the Civil War and how the drafted operated. This is the best set of draft/substitute forms we have ever seen!
