COMMEMORATING THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CIVIL WAR WITH

THE FINEST ORIGINAL SOLDIER'S LETTERS AND ARTIFACTS

War-Date Gen. Rufus Saxton ALS (Medal of Honor Winner)
"I hope soon to hear of the capture of Charleston"

I hope soon to hear of the capture of Charleston & doubt not I shall.  It will be a pleasant thing for you to remember in the future that you have borne so prominent a part in the capture of the great stronghold of treason.”  This is the great second paragraph of Union General Rufus Saxton’s letter to Col. W. W. H. Davis of the 104th Penn. Volunteers commanding the brigade at the siege of Charleston!  The letter is written from Beaufort, South Carolina on August 16, 1863.  Saxton won the Medal of Honor for his defense of Harper’s Ferry earlier in the war.  He was also the key figure in the enlistment of blacks into the Federal Army.  This is a great example of Saxton and a neat South Carolina piece!  Condition is very fine with mounting traces (which could easily be removed) on the back page, not affecting the letter.
