Museum Quality Americana
Historical significance:
1) This letter written to a family member shows the generosity and commitment of Lee to his relatives.
2) The relative is from the famous George Mason family of Virginia.
3) In 1872, Emily V. Mason wrote Popular Life of Gen. Robert Edward Lee.
4) Eva’s brother did receive his desire of joining the Cavalry and became a member of John S. Mosby’s 43rd
Battalion of Virginia Cavalry.
5) Full letters all in the hand of Lee are much scarcer than letters he just signed.
6) The envelope was mailed by Lee from Dixie, Virginia
Condition: Strong, dark ink written on blue Confederate paper. Several small fold tears
that have been professionally repaired. Outstanding eye appeal! It is rare to have a cover present and
this example has at least a partial cover. Partial in that one stamp has been removed, however, one
still remains. Another plus is the original envelope that housed this Lee letter for the past 100+ years!
A fine example of a war-date Lee ALS!

My Dear Cousin Eva
I am very sorry to learn by your letter of the 29th the continued indisposition
of your brother Landon. He should not return to duty till able. As to his preference for
outdoor work I can understand. He might be detailed for office work till able to take the
field. If he desires Cav Service, by making application for any Comp he may select, &
obtaining the approval of his command officers & of the other officers to which he wishes
to go, provided the Comp is in this Army he can be transferred. He will have however to
provide himself with a horse, & I fear he will find it a hard Service. Either of the Fitzhugh
Lees would be glad to have him I know - & if I can do anything for him or you or any one
let me know.
Very truly your Cousin
RE Lee
Sweet Eva Mason
