Unpublished CS Spy CDV

This rare photo, probably unique, was found in a CDV album from Halifax, Nova Scotia.   It is a photo of the Confederate spy, Jacob Thompson, who was charge of the Confederacy’s secret mission in Canada.  It was Thompson who organized the Lake Erie raid to free the Confederate prisoners on Johnson’s Island.  This raid was foiled, but none the less is an amazing story to read about!  Sold with this CDV is a copy of the excellent article, “Spies across the Border,” from Civil War Times Magazine, June 2001.  This photo, with the Confederate flag in the background, was taken in early May of 1865.  Arriving in Halifax, from Montreal, Thompson learned that he had been accused complicity in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln… again, read the article in Civil War Times.  The CDV is in pristine condition.  The back mark on the photo is “W. Chase, 159 Hollis Street, Halifax.”
