Museum Quality Americana
An incredible grouping of three stereo views taken by Alexander Gardner in the aftermath of the Bloodiest one-day battle in U.S. history. On September 17th 1862, at the Battle of Antietam, there were more American casualties than any other day in any other war – before or since. There were over 25000 dead and wounded on that single day. At one point, the losses were so devastating that both sides had to call it truce to care for the wounded and bury the dead. These three photos are amongst the most graphic that Gardener took during the Civil War. They almost never become available for sale, and certainly not this series of three! Condition is very good, with minor stains and scraps.
