SPECIALIZING IN ORIGINAL CIVIL WAR MEMORABILIA
Great Confederate Medical Item: The Surgeon General of South Carolina, Robert Wilson Gibbes Tells off the Editor of Leslie’s Illustrated!
Not only was Gibbs a famous author, editor, naturalist and surgeon, his art collection was quite famous. During the Civil War Gibbs served as Surgeon General of South Carolina and endeavored to improve the medical capacity of the Confederacy. Federal troops destroyed his home and prized possessions when they burned Columbia in 1865.

This document on official Head Quarters, Surgeon General’s Department stationery, is dated Charleston February 27th, 1861. Writing to the editor of Leslie’s Illustrated (and probably referring to either the Dec. 1860 or Jan. 1861 issue… it would be fun to find that issue) Gibbes writes:

Dear Sir,
The portrait and memoir in Leslie’s Illustrated paper are both as defective as the name of.
                                          Very Respectfully,
                                                   Robert Wilson Gibbes, MD.
