Here is a neat 10 dollar Confederate bill series of 1863 showing the South Carolina state capital. The note is in good to very good condition. On the reverse of the note is written:
“Lt. Col. Louis Schaffner
To His Dear Mother
Salonie Schaffner
Rock Island Barracks
Rock Island, Ill.
January 3rd, 1864”
Lt. Col. Schaffner was apparently visiting the prison and got (or bought) this $10 Confederate note from a prisoner and sent it home as a souvenir to his mother. Later Schaffner became Lieutenant Colonel of the 153rd Illinois Infantry. He probably meant to write 1865 instead of 1864 as the year had just begun. A neat relic! Written in red ink the inscription is rather difficult to read, but with the color enlargement that we will send with the bill it will be great for display!
