Found in a Grouping of Charleston Papers - A Slave “Hire” Agreement – The Type that would Require the Purchase of a Slave Tag!
This 3 ½ x 8 inch document in ink is an agreement, or promissory note, to pay $100 “for the hire of negro man Alfred for the year 1863, and further obligate ourselves to keep him well & comfortable clad during the year & to return him with all the clothing usually given to hirelings.” As witness are hands and seals, 20th day of December, 1862. Under that is written, “To Mt. Nelson” & signed “Troy Braid”.
