An Amazing Document from Charleston, South Carolina’s Slave History – Slave Dealer John S. Ryan Sells An Old Negro Named “Plenty” for $10
John S. Ryan was a broker and auctioneer at 22 Broad Street in Charleston. He lived at 19 King Street. This receipt measures 3 x 8 inches and is on blue stationery:

Reed. Charleston Nov. 23, 1855. 
from William A. Fox – Ten Dollars 
buy in full for an old Negro named 
Plenty – Sold without warranties 
except as to title, which I warrant 
$10 -      John S. Ryan 


Usual expected aging, written in nice dark ink. How sad that an old slave worth only $10 would not be given his freedom!
