Here is a wonderful “matching” set of cover and letter both pieces having the business imprint of “Hutson Lee, Broker Auctioneer & Commission Agent, Charleston, S.C.” The cover and letter would frame up beautifully with a picture of a slave auction scene. The cover by itself would sell in the $600+ dollar range at auction. The letter is an ALS – All in the hand of the slave dealer, Hutson Lee. The letter is headed “57th Broad St. July 18th, 1859.” It is written to “Bolling Hall Esq., Montgomery, Ala.” Hutson is asking Mr. Hall if he would allow one of his Negro slaves, Rhina “who was my child’s nurse, to meet me there as my wife & little ones are anxious to see her again.”
Here is a wonderful example of a white slave dealer’s family becoming attached to one of their former slaves! Both cover and letter are in fine condition and one of the finest slavery associated pieces that we have ever owned!
