CDV - Wartime View of the "Sister Churches" in the Aftermath of the Great 1861 Charleston Fire!

This CDV by “J. T. Reading & Co. of Savannah, Georgia”, shows the Unitarian and Lutheran churches after the fire of 1861.  Saint John’s Lutheran Church is to the left and the Unitarian Church to the right.  A similar view showing these two churches (although not as clearly as our CDV) is shown in Jack Thomson’s book, Charleston at War on page 53.

Quoting Thomson’s book, “St. John’s Lutheran Church, had a remarkable minister, John Bachman.  An ornithologist, he befriended John James Audubon while he was working on his famed book on birds.  Bachman’s daughters married Audubon’s sons.  During the war he made patriotic speeches, ran some benefits, and on occasion interpreted for some captured German-speaking Federal soldiers.”

The CDV is in excellent condition with fine contrast.
