Museum Quality Americana
An extremely rare CDV of the “Gray Ghost,” John Singleton Mosby. While we have handled several Mosby signed images post-war or signed without the designation of “Colonel,” this is the first image signed in full “John S. Mosby, Colonel, C. S. A.” The imprint on the reverse is Vannerson of Richmond, Virginia. Mosby is photographed in his Confederate uniform, in half-length portrait. Mosby’s promotion to Colonel took place in December 1864, so it is likely this carte was signed between that date and April 1865, when he disbanded his rangers rather than surrender. Carte is in fine condition with minor stains and bends to corners. Overall appearance is outstanding with a wonderful dark signature! Traces of tape stain to reverse. An amazing CDV!
