Signed on the front in nice, dark ink by Rufus Saxton Brevet Maj. Gen., this CDV has a GREAT back mark!  On the reverse: “Sam A. Cooley, Photographer, Tenth Army Corps., Hilton Head, S.C., Folly Island, S.C., Beaufort, S.C., Jacksonville, Fla.”  Saxton won the Medal of Honor for his role at Harper’s Ferry, where he repulsed Ewell’s attack.  He then was the main Commander of U.S. forces in the Beaufort, South Carolina area.  A very rare CDV and the only Saxton we have seen signed on the front!
