Sherrill KIA Gettysburg

Enlistment document appointing Charles C. Wright, Corporal in Company H. of the 126th Regiment New York Volunteers dated August 16, 1862.   Interestingly, the first thing Wright did was to get captured 9/15/1862 at Harper’s Ferry.  This document is signed by the Commanding Corporal Eliakim Sherrill.   According to Civil War database records, Corps. Sherrill enlisted on 8/20/1862, so apparently, he began to sign things even before he officially enlisted!  More likely, his enlistment date was also 8/16/62 and he signed this document on the very first day he was on the job!  Actually, he wasn’t commissioned Colonel until 9/6/62.  Sherrill would be killed leading the 126th at Gettysburg ten months later.   Sherrill’s autograph is extremely rare and this is a wonderful example in nice dark ink!  The document measures approximately 10 by 15 inches and is in fine condition with the exception of the obvious folds and one very tiny corner piece missing.
