Rare Millen, Georgia  P.O.W.

A CDV of John C. Irwin who entered the service as a Sergeant on 2/11/1864.  Entering the 53rd Pennsylvania Infantry, he lasted only a few months before being captured and sent to Millen, Georgia.  This prison opened in October 1864, established primarily to handle the overflow from Andersonville.  Irwin must have been one of the first prisoners to die in this prison because he died on 10/14/64 (according to the Civil War database)!  The CDV shows Irwin probably just prior to his enlistment as he is in civilian clothes.  He signs the CDV in ink on the front “Yours truly John C. Irwin Co. H 53rd Pa. V.V.”  This was probably given to a family member as above his head written on the photo is “Died at Millen, Ga., a prisoner of war, October 25, 1864.”  Note that the data base and the CDV have different dates of his death.  Perhaps the 25th was when the family found out he had died?  According to Harrison’s Prisoners’ Mail from the American Civil War, there is only one letter known from this prison.
