Nice Little Document – Punishing the Residents of Charleston, S.C. for their “Insurrectionary” Behavior
This 5 x 7 ½ inch document has at the top “United States of America, Receipt for Direct Taxes”. The United States Government by act of Congress made an act, as stated on this document “An act for the collection of direct taxes in insurrectionary districts within the United States.” The document charges Sylvia Miles living at 2 Heywards Court which was assessed for $1,200 a direct tax of $9.60. It is dated May 5th, 1865 and signed by the Commissioner S. Z. Cooley.

A nice little piece of Charleston history.
