This cover addressed to Col. Henry C. Cabell in Richmond, Virginia is in very good condition. There is a manuscript “Due 3” at the top along with a manuscript date of “June ‘59” on the front. In the left corner is an oval stamping “Ravenel & Co. Charleston, S.C.” In the right corner is an excellent .03 cent red-brown Washington stamp with a beautiful “Charleston, Jun. 18, S.C.” cancellation. Henry Coalter Cabell was a 41-year-old lawyer from Richmond. In April of 1861 he became Captain of Company B of the 38th Battn. of the Virginia Heavy Artillery. Apparently he had been a “Colonel” in the Virginia Militia prior to the war. He became Colonel again in the 1st Virginia Artillery regiment in July of 1862.
