COMMEMORATING THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CIVIL WAR WITH

THE FINEST ORIGINAL SOLDIER'S LETTERS AND ARTIFACTS
CS Political Fervor in Augusta, Georgia - May 1st, 1860

This is a long 4 page letter written on blue-gray stationary in ink from a citizen named Dan living in Augusta, Georgia.  Check out this remarkable content regarding his view of the state of affairs in our country:

·         “Now with regard to the aspect of political affairs.  Their importance certainly claims for them a
place in my epistle.  Indeed universal nature seems to be imbued with their spirit so that every
object is vocal and inculcates a lesson.”

·         “I was one of those whose hopes looked to a peaceful adjustment of existing and inimical difficulties
and altho’ occasionally something would present itself to blight, my buoyant anticipations yet never
for once did my fears prevail.”

·         “But the all important question now is shall we continue to hope for a great future or shall hope be
dethroned and fear usurp its seat.  If we attend to the admonitions of present realities we will, of
necessity, arrive at this awful though logical conclusion.”

·         “Northern fanaticism which now rages with a flame that will require oceans of blood to quench.
The unsheathed sword, the dagger, the pointed spears, the loaded cannon, all proclaim alike a
disturbed state and the prevalence of enmity to which history presents no parallel.”

·         “The warlike preparation of the north compares very favorably with those of the South, a statement
which every paper verifies.  Forces from that quarter are flocking to the standard with intentions
which they in their infatuation pronounce patriotic and with resolutions what they are willing to
seal with blood to support the ‘Stars and Stripes’.”

·         “The blaze of military ardor is fully kindled here as the shout of “to arms” echoes from every corner.
This city presents the appearance of a camp as soldiers are visible in whatever direction we turn
our eyes, whose motto seems to be, judging from appearances – victory, freedom or death.  The war
has been inaugurated and may continue to rage with a fury hither to unknown.”

·         “We have heard of the alpha which was painted in flattering colors but who of us can describe omega.
The first battle has been fought and termed in cheering results.  It was miraculous and un-miraculous
because bloodless.  But shall this description depict the final struggle.  We would all wish that such
would be the case but our wishes are of small moment.  That a war policy would have been adopted
by men of understanding appears superficially at least to be preposterous but this Lincoln and his
advising host have done.  I am of opinion that were their brains microscopically examined or
chemically analyzed, they would be found deficient or at least made up of an impure material so
that were they weighed in the balance they would be ‘found wanting.’”

If you live in Georgia… especially the Augusta area, you’ve got to own this one!
