Columbia June 7, 1861 - S.C. has Seceded & Gov. Pickens Stops the Work of Building the State House!
In this ALS by South Carolina Governor F. W. Pickens he tells Mr. Furman, President of the Bank of the State of South Carolina, that he should continue to sell bonds at $95. This letter is all in the hand of Gov. Pickens and was the copy he kept… which was rescued from the capitol before Columbia was burned in 1865. The letter is in fine condition and has file docketing on the reverse of a second page. A wonderful, historic collectible from the early days of the South Carolina Confederacy! It is written on official “State of South Carolina Executive Department” stationary.

State of South Carolina
Executive Department
7 June 1861
To Mr. Furman, President
Of the Bank of the State –
Sir
In any notice I may have given to the
Commissioner of the State House to suspend the work, I did not mean
to approve that you must not sell any more of the stock if a purchaser
offered and not below the ninety five required, but I was required to
stop the work the 1 April unless the bonds could be sold for ninety five.
F. W. Pickens
