Paul - Blinded at Gettysburg

A great frameable pair: first, a 4 by 6 inch sheet of patriotic stationary (head of Washington up in left hand corner) that Paul has used to give his autograph to an admirer.

                “A free people & a free press” G. R. Paul Brig. Genl. Vols. Jan. 1, 64

The really interesting (and sad) thing about Paul’s writing is that Paul writes right off the page… he starts the word press and runs out of paper!  At the top of the sheet, typed in blue ink from an old typewriter is written “Blind from a wound received at Gettysburg.”  With Paul’s autographed sheet, is a side photo of Paul showing his damaged eyes.  This photo is CDV side and looks to be made up privately as opposed to being ordered from some photographer (there is no photographers imprint) and the photo is on old plain cardstock.  CDV’s of Paul are extremely rare and this photo is similar (but we don’t think totally identical) to Paul’s photo found on stereo-view cards.  In any case, what you see is the only view of the wounded Paul available.  These two pieces make a great frameable set for the Gettysburg collector!
