Museum Quality Americana
This silver medal was authorized on December 8, 1848 by the South Carolina House of Representatives. It was presented to the officers and men of the Palmetto Regiment. Production and distribution of the medals occurred in 1850. This medal when found in excellent condition is consistently judged as being one of the most beautiful medals minted in the 19 century. Around the edges of the medal are the names of the battles where so many Americans lost their lives. The Aztec club has a wonderful website discussing these medals. This particular medal was issued to Pvt. George McElden of Co. E. He died at Puebla on July 19th 1847. While we have seen several of these medals… usually not for sale… this is the finest condition one we have handled.
