Silver Fifth Corps badge belonging to James A. Look, a 32 year old from Rochester, New York. James was a member of Co. E of the 140th Regt. NY Volunteers. The 140th were called the “Rochester Racehorses” and recruited in Monroe County, organizing at Rochester. James and the rest of his regt. were mustered into the service on September 13, 1862 for three years. The 140th served in the army of the Potomac and had heavy losses at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Their gallant leader Col. “Paddy” O’Rorke was killed at Gettysburg while leading his men into action at Little Round Top. In the Wilderness Battle in May of 1864 the 140th had their highest casualties of the war. It was just after the Wilderness fight that James Look was wounded at Laurel Hill and taken prisoner. Badge is in excellent condition, complete with “T” pin back, about the size of a quarter. A truly outstanding inscribed Corps badge!
