Negroes for Defenses of Atlanta

Here is a rare PRINTED 6 x 8 filled in form, dated Atlanta, GA. May 24, 1864.  A slave owner, an E. Steadmen of Gwinnett County, Georgia agrees to let the Confederate Government use his 25 year old slave named Dick, valued at $3,500.  Dick is to work on the “Defenses of Atlanta,” with the following conditions:



           
“The conditions to be as follows:

Twenty-five dollars per month, to be paid for

each negro, and rations furnished by the

Government; Medical attention furnished

___________  Sick time not to be deducted,

when the negro was sound on delivery. 

Runaway time to be deducted.  In event of

Death by casualty on the work, or by exposure

to the enemy, the Government to pay the

above appraised value.”

 
This document is signed “For Confed. States of America, L. P. Grant, Capt. Engs. (Engineers) & Agt.  The document has age staining and some ink bleed through from the endorsement on the back; however, it is written in nice dark ink and possesses a fine display quality.  A wonderful Atlanta slavery document!
