Libby Prison Medal

A large, heavy 2 and 5/8 inch medal minted to commemorate the opening of the Libby Prison War Museum in Chicago in 1893.  The medal looks to be made out of lead.  The story goes that bullets were melted down to cast these medals?  Libby Prison was taken down brick by brick and moved to Chicago where it was reassembled for the Chicago World’s Fair.  What a feat this was, and this medal apparently could be purchased as a souvenir... probably as a paper weight.  Since lead is a soft metal, not too many of these survived!  We have only seen one other example and it was so smashed you could hardly tell what it was.  This example has only a few dings toward the bottom where the date is and a minor rim dent.  It is a scarce medal!  It displays well and is certainly an important piece for a Libby or P.O.W. collection.
