Lee is at Hagerstown...

A two page U.S. Military telegram sent from Maryland Heights on June 23, 1863 during the Gettysburg campaign.  The sender was Brig. Gen. Tyler and he is writing an important war directive to Gen. Hooker.

The troops that were at Sharpsburg yesterday have all left.

The infy. & arty. for Hagarstown & the cavy. for Frederick.

General Early’s Div., thirty-four (34) pieces of arty. & about

fifteen thousand Infy., passed on yesterday to reinforce

Rhodes at Hagarstown.  The Signal Officer just reports that

the atmosphere is clear & that he can see a line of troops ten

or twelve (12) miles long – moving in direction of Berrysville

towards, Shephordstown ford.  It looks as if Lee’s movement is

towards Hagarstown & on Penna.  Gen Ewell I am sure passed

through Sharpsburg yesterday in an ambulance.

                                                                                Brig. Gen. Tyler

The telegram is written in nice dark ink on official military telegraph forms.  An amazingly historic document as Lee makes his invasion into Pennsylvania!  The key piece for the Gettysburg collector!
