Ladies Gunboat Broadside

Confederate broadside printed by Evans and Togswell No. 3 Broad Street in Charleston, South Carolina.  This 6 5/8 by 13 7/8 broadside announces a patriotic music festival “Proposed by some public spirited ladies of Charleston” to aid in the construction of “The Ladies’ Gunboat.”  The Ladies’ Gunboat was the C.S.S. Palmetto State and Ironclad being built for the Confederate Navy.  The broadside lists the various songs included in the concert with numbers such as “God saved the South” and “My Maryland,” along with Beethoven and Shubert numbers.  The broadside states the location of the concert as being Hibernian Hall.  This hall is located at 105 Meeting Street, just north of the intersection of Meeting and Broad Street (commonly referred to as “Four Corners of the Law”).  Hibernian Hall was the site of the Democratic National Convention in 1860 – a critical political gathering.  The date of the concert is listed as “this Thursday evening, 20th instant.”  The ladies were responsible for raising 15% of the $200,000 required for construction of the Palmetto State and this was accomplished through Gunboat Fairs, concerts, and the sale of Gunboat quilts.  Their fund-raising campaign lasted through 1862, thus making the date of this broadside the week of November 20th 1862.  We were privileged to find 4 of these broadsides, this one being the only one left and kept because it was in the best condition.  Condition is toned with foxing but overall very good.  An attractive and historic piece of Confederate history!
