You have all heard of Mary Chestnut’s Civil War, a bestselling book published in 1981. Mary’s full name was Mary Boykin Miller Chestnut and John Boykin was her uncle. Like Mary, he lived in Camden, South Carolina and he owned many slaves. This document dated May 30, 1825 is a Bill of Sale for 66 Negroes. All the Negroes are listed by name such as: Charity, Sue, Buck, Bully, Button, Primus, Friday, and Cork, etc. The document uses the standard phrase, “Together with the future issue and increase of the females.” The buyer is a Mr. James Deas. This is a legal size document and is in excellent condition. In Mary Chestnut’s diary, Uncle John is referred to several times. Truly a unique piece!
