From Our Johnson’s Island Collection: An Original Broadside for a Concert put on by the “Island Minstrels” to Benefit the Prisoners
A similar example of this rare broadside is found in the book, “Rebels on Lake Erie”. In that book, the pictured broadside is dated October 26th, 1863. Comedian Billy Boyd, “Has volunteered his services for this occasion.” On our broadside, dated September 19th, 1863, is printed, “First Appearance of the Celebrated Irish Comedian Billy Boyd!”

The broadside measures 12 x 5 inches and is in fine condition with some staining/aging… a truly satisfying appearance. This broadside was purchased by us back in April of 2008 from Bloomsburg Auction in New York City. At the time, and up to the present, we have not seen another example of ANY Minstrel Broadside from Johnson’s Island prisoner of war camp come on the market.
