Here is a nice signed document from Indian fighter, John S. Poland. Captain 6th Infantry, commanding the post at Standing Rock, Dakota Territory. It is dated August 4th, 1876.
SITTING BULL, WHOSE FORCES HAD WHIPED OUT CUSTER
5 WEEKS EARLIER, WAS CONFINED AT STANDING ROCK!
The document is also signed by 2nd Lieut. John Roach of the 17th Infantry, “By authority of Lieut. Gen. Sheridan, Comdg. Mil. Div. Mo.” The document grants Sgt. Charles Williams of Company E, 17th Regiment of Infantry 25 cents per day for rations while he was on furlough. Williams also signs the document.
Interestingly, Williams was “Paid in funds from Office Safe; Treasury notes and fractional currency”.
Indian War documents are much scarcer than their Civil War counterparts! The document is in fine condition with several ink smudges.
