His Last Birthday

A small 4 ½ by 7 ½ note that has been mounted in an autographed collectors album.  The note reads:

                                                                                                                                Camp Butler

                                                                                                                                New Port News

                                                                                                                                22nd Dec. 1861

This is the Lord’s day, and also

my birthday, and I am fifty-eight years

                                                old.  You have my autograph.

                                                                                Jos. K. F. Mansfield

                                                                                Brig. Genl. U. S. A.

General Mansfield spent months politicking in Washington for a field command that, he hoped, would crown his forty year military career.  Two days before the Battle of Antietam he got his wish when he was made commander of the Federal XII Corps.  Unfortunately Mansfield was mortally wounded leading his men in a charge and died the same day.  Condition of the piece is fine.  Items where Mansfield signs his full name with rank are very scarce.
