Hand-Carved Miniature Bible – “Made of Bone & Wax by J. E. H. while a Prisoner in Andersonville”
This little Bible measuring approximately 1 x 1 ¼ inches is mounted in a period frame along with the original tag that identifies it. The tag measures approximately 1 ¾ x 7 inches and reads:

“Made of bone & wax by J. E. H. while
a prisoner in Andersonville”

The tag and Bible are mounted on old cardboard which is glued to the old frame. The frame is a beautiful gold gilted one measuring 7 ¼ x 10 inches. The glass is old (with tiny bubbles).

When we first purchased this piece out of an old, old collection we did not think there was much chance of finding who J. E. H. was… but sure enough in going through the Andersonville list, we found him:

James E. Holbrook, Co. E, 85th N.Y. Infantry
Captured 4-20-64 at Plymouth, N.C.
Died of disease as a POW 8-21-64

We carefully took the back off of the frame to see if there was anything on the back side of the Bible… sure enough Holbrook had engraved a red painted cross! We put everything back together, and it makes for a wonderful display with our photos of the Bible.
