COMMEMORATING THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CIVIL WAR WITH

THE FINEST ORIGINAL SOLDIER'S LETTERS AND ARTIFACTS
Great K.I.A. Medically Related Pair

Private Halsey Bartlett, Company A of the 6th Connecticut Infantry, was killed by gunshot on July 17th, 1864 at Bermuda Hundred, Va.  We are offering two great pieces:

1)     A letter written by Rev. T. S. Doolittle a Delegate of the Christian Commission
to Halsey Bartlett’s mother notifying her of the death of her son.

2)    The actual death certificate sent home with the body signed by Surgeon Doctor Richard Burr.
Besides stating that he died of a gunshot wound, Burr writes, “I certify that this body is disinfected.”

With this death certificate, we are including the copy of a photo of Doctor Burr taken from the very well
known stereoview of him embalming a dead soldier, getting him ready for transport.

WHEN FRAMED UP THESE THREE PIECES MAKE FOR A WONDERFUL AND TOUCHING DISPLAY.  THIS IS THE ONLY DOCUMENT THAT WE HAVE EVER HAD FILLED OUT AND SIGNED BY DOCTOR BURR!

Doctor Richard Burr was an EMBALMING SURGEON in the Army of the Potomac.  On his calling card he advertised, “Bodies recovered from the battlefield and forwarded to the order of friends.”  His office was at City Point, Virginia.  A wonderful pair for the advanced collector or museum!

                                            Mrs. Christina Bartlett,

It is my sad duty to communicate to you the fact of the death of your son.
He was shot at a place called Wier Bottom.  Lieut
. Hammond, in whose company your
son was, lies here wounded in the hip.  It is by his request that I send you this line.  I am
not able to give you any particulars as I saw Lieut. H only a little while ago & then the
                                            nurses were remo
ving him from the tent to an ambulance preparatory to his going to
                                            Fort Monroe.
He said some of the company either had written to you fully or would do
                                            so
.

I sympathize with you, though a stranger to you, in this sad affliction.
                                            The Lieut. told me
that you were a widow lady.  May the God of the widow be your God
& console you by his Spirit in this great bereavement
.
