Presentation Copy by General Samuel Wylie Crawford of His Book:
The Genesis of the Civil War: The Story of Fort Sumter 1860-1861
Gen. Crawford was the Assistant Surgeon in charge of the medical staff at Fort Sumter under Robert Anderson. In 1887 he published his book on the story of Fort Sumter titled, The Genesis of the Civil War. It was published in New York by Charles Webster & Company. Crawford had a number of copies done in a red binding which included a presentation page that he could present to his friends. This copy was presented to Frederick Sheldon Esq., New York City, with the compliments of the author…
CRAWFORD HAS ADDED “& HIS FRIEND”
AND THEN SIGNS “S. W. CRAWFORD, BVT. MAJ. GNL., UNITED
STATES ARMY… PHILADELPHIA, PA. DECEMBER 23rd, 1887.”
The book is in very good condition with minor soiling to the binding. The cover has some minor separation from the contents but still holds firm. Across from the title page is the famous steel engraving of “Major Anderson and his officers at Fort Sumter”… which of course includes the picture of Crawford. A truly wonderful and rare Fort Sumter collectible and the only such piece that we (and the rare book collectors that we have showed it to) have ever seen!
