Important Berdan Sharpshooter Related Letter Written by Union General J. H. Hobart Ward – Lt. Col. Trepp has been Killed & Needs to be Replaced
This one page letter in ink is headed “Head Quarters 1st Div. 3rd Corps, Dec. 7, 1863”. The letter is written to Adjt. General J. T. Sprague. Gen. J. H. Hobart Ward had led the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 3rd Corps at the battle of Gettysburg. This was the brigade that the Sharpshooters were in, and it fell upon Ward to recommend an Officer to fill the void when Lt. Col. Casper Trepp was killed at the battle of Mine Run on November 30th.

Lt. Col. Trepp was a true hero, and everyone knew it. Col. Berdan had been insanely jealous of Trepp’s leadership ability and popularity. The battle of Gettysburg would be the last time Berdan was in command of the Sharpshooters. Trepp was now the man. Thus this sad letter from Ward makes his recommendation for replacement.
