Gettysburg Campaign – Headquarters Army of the Potomac, July 17th, 1863 – General Meade Gives Orders about Confiscating Supplies for the Army – Legal Size Document in Ink Sent to 3rd Corps Excelsior Brigade
This one page document written on blue stationery was penned by 1st Lieut. J. A. Smith, a member of the 3rd Corps, 2nd Division, 2nd Brigade… which was the New York Excelsior Brigade. Of course before Smith’s signature there are 3 other Officials who did not actually sign it: For Major General Meade, Seth Williams. Then Lieut. Col. John B. Howard and Capt. Thomas P. Johnston.

Basically the document states that when supplies are taken to feed the troops the farmers will be compensated. HOWEVER:

“NO SUPPLIES TAKEN IN THE COUNTRY WILL BE PAID FOR EXCEPT
TO PERSONS WHO TAKE THE OATH OF ALLEGIANCE.”

Condition is excellent. A nice Gettysburg Campaign item.

#G191 - Price $195
