General McClure was the General that had permission to burn Newark in order to prevent the British from using it.  McClure did not give the citizens of Newark ample warning so they could escape.  Fort George had to be abandoned and a retreat was made to Fort Nigeria.  McClure’s attack on Newark inspired British retaliation… and the Indians in fighting for the British did many atrocities… thus, the need to not neglect paying promised prize money!
