In the past, we have had several Fitz Lee post-war letters. We have also had one war-date letter… but never have we had a war-date letter written on Lee’s personal Head Quarters “Cavalry Corps. Army of Northern Virginia” Stationary! The exceptionally neat part about this document is that when Lee had his stationary printed on his printing press, he used paper “confiscated” from the Mt. Holly Paper Co. taken on their trip to Pa. 8 months earlier. This Mt. Holly Paper imprint is clearly seen on the top of the page (pictured below).
Dated April 4, 1864, General Fitz Lee (the nephew of R. E. Lee) writes to Col. George Washington Custis Lee (R. E. Lee eldest son). George W. C. Lee, a Colonel and A. D. C. to Jefferson Davis would become a General two months later. Here is a transcription of the letter:
Colonel,
I have the honor to enclose a letter to the President
from Mrs. Dr. Stephens, living in the “valley” of Va. below
Winchester.
She transmitted it to me with the request that I
should send it to him. It reached me from the enemy’s
lines by the hands of a scout. And I shall be happy if it
requires an answer to send it through to her by the same
channel.Very Respectfully,
Your Obt. Servt.
Fitz Lee
Major General
With the letter, which is in fine condition, comes a steal engraving of Fitz Lee and the combination of the two pieces make an outstanding display!
