E. E. Cross KIA at Gettysburg

Col. Edward E. Cross led the 5th New Hampshire under Hancock at Gettysburg.  This signed endorsement measuring 3 ½ by 3 inches is dated May 25, 1863.  One month later, on June 28, 1863, Cross remarked to Lieut. Charles A. Hail that the next battle would be his last, and requested him to take care of his belongings after his death.  At Gettysburg, General Hancock rode up to Cross and said, “This day will bring you a star.”  Cross replied, “No, this will be my last battle.”  Not long later, a sniper hit Cross with a minié ball in the stomach.  Our Autograph-Endorsement-Signed is in nice dark ink and perfect to be framed with an image of Cross.  It is headed “Head Quarters 1st Brigade, May 25, 1863.”  “I fully concur in the above respectfully forwarded.  Edward E. Cross, Col. Com. Brigade.”
