One of a Kind - A Draft Dodger Writes to Friends in Akron, Ohio from Canada - With Scarce Cover Having 1859 10 Cent Brown Stamp (17b; SG36)

Here is something we have never seen before, an actual letter from a young man who had been drafted but instead chose to go to Canada.

Glad that I did Skedaddle from the war.  I live happy and free and I have my meals three times a day and a good bed to sleep.  Money or not I will stay in Canada.”

The letter is dated August 30th, 1863.  The cover has an Akron, Ohio September 9 cancellation with a ten cent brown Canada stamp.  It also has a stamping “ADVERTISED” in the upper left corner… somehow miss sent?  The letter is four pages in ink.

One of the most unusual letters and covers we have had!  Originally in the Robert A. Siegel Auction of June 2012.  A true rarity!

#PC253 - Price $450
