This CDV was in the George Meade Jr. collection that sold about 10 years ago. Meade (son of the General) served under Lt. Col. C. Ross Smith in the 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry, better known as “Rush’s Lancers”. In the auction (where we purchased this CDV) there were a number of Smith items and the CDV of Smith was highly contested. The CDV is nicely tinted, has a few emulsion flaws (that do not detract) and signs of mounting on the reverse. The photographer imprint is Wenderoth & Taylor, Philadelphia.
Along with the CDV is a letter all in Smith’s hand written to Col. Meade on October 8th, 1888 regarding the Veteran Association of the 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry attending their monument dedication on the battlefield of Gettysburg, October 14th, 1888. Smith tells Meade that, “If possible it will afford me much pleasure to be present”.
A great pair for the Gettysburg collector!
