Document appointing Isaac S. Kerstetter 2^nd Sergeant in Company E, 142^nd PA. Volunteers dated September 18, 1862.  Isaac served faithfully in that position advancing to 2^nd Lieutenant prior to the Gettysburg campaign and 1^st Lieutenant in November of 1863.  Of course, the important thing about this nice 9 ½ by 15 inch document is the fact that it is signed by Robert P. Cummins, Col. of the 142^nd.  On McPherson’s Ridge, July 1, 1863, Cummins fell from a mortal wound leading his men against several North Carolina Regiments.  He died in the Lutheran Seminary building, which was being used as a hospital.  Autographs of Cummins are very rare and this is an excellent example.  Document is in fine condition with only a few age spots and the obvious fold lines.
