Document appointing Isaac S. Kerstetter 2nd Sergeant in Company E, 142nd PA. Volunteers dated September 18, 1862. Isaac served faithfully in that position advancing to 2nd Lieutenant prior to the Gettysburg campaign and 1st Lieutenant in November of 1863. Of course, the important thing about this nice 9 ½ by 15 inch document is the fact that it is signed by Robert P. Cummins, Col. of the 142nd. On McPherson’s Ridge, July 1, 1863, Cummins fell from a mortal wound leading his men against several North Carolina Regiments. He died in the Lutheran Seminary building, which was being used as a hospital. Autographs of Cummins are very rare and this is an excellent example. Document is in fine condition with only a few age spots and the obvious fold lines.
