The Colonel of the 5th Maine Infantry Writes his Wife from the Battlefield
of Antietam - "I have seen thousands of the dead this morning."
This two page letter from Colonel Clark S. Edwards of the 5th Maine Infantry is written in blue ink on a half sheet of paper… WHILE ON THE BATTLEFIELD! Clark would write his wife just about every day no matter where he was. We are the proud owners of his battle letters and will eventually list more. If you are an Antietam or Maine collector, don’t pass this one up!
On the Battle Field at or Near Sharpsburg,
Md. Sept. 19th, 1862
I still live but thousands that was alive and in our army of Wednesday
are now numbered with the dead. Lieut. Brown is one of the numbered. He was
killed in the fight of Wednesday but he fell in fighting for his country. He is
spoken of in the highest terms by his men or what is left of them. The 7th ME. is
very badly cut up. Also the 10 ME. Regt. loss is quite small in this engagement.
Our loss is but few and only one mortally wounded and he was shot yesterday
while skirmishing in front. The Rebels left last night in the night. Our fight of
Wednesday was the most severe of any of the war but we drove them at every
point.
Yesterday they came in our line with a flag of truce and requested seven
hours of Secession which was granted them to bury their dead which was carried
to the lines but the rascals took advantage of it and was leaving at the time but
we may overtake them again today. I’ll tell you of the Sunday fight. It is the best
fight of the war. If I had time I could write pages that would interest you. I have
seen thousands of the dead this morning but I have no time to write more.
