The Great Charleston Earthquake of August 31st, 1886 - Phillip Dressel, UCV Member & Business Owner in Charleston, S.C., Writes a Thank You to GAR “Comrades” in Massachusetts for their Financial Help – YOU HAVE GOT TO READ HOW GREAT THIS IS: “Sweet flowers of peace, grow proudly over the grave where civil discord lies buried…peace reigns supreme in this grand old union… we are comrades once more.”
This 2 page thank you is Phillip Dressel’s retained copy. He writes it on his business stationery “Broker and Commission Merchant, Charleston, S.C.” It is not dated, however, we know it is 1886. It is just an amazing example of the healing that occurred between those who fought against each other.
