Museum Quality Americana
A Confederate CDV by Anderson & Blessing, 61 Camp Street, New Orleans, La. Dressed in his full Confederate uniform, Colonel I. G. W. Steedman, M.D. was the Chief Confederate Surgeon at the Union Prisoner of War Camp on Johnson’s Island in Lake Erie near Sandusky, Ohio. The CDV mount is in very fine condition with sharp corners. The photo is typical Confederate low-quality with quite a bit of molting, but is sharp and in focus. Signed in pencil of the period, Steedman has written below the photo “Col. I. G. W. Steedman, Allen. Ala.” With the CDV, is a partial page from a Johnson’s Island autograph album that Steedman signed (see picture below). On the other side of the partial page, a Lieut. in the 9th Kentucky Cavalry, Morgan’s Division has signed his name. Also included is a letter from a Confederate Captain in March of 1870 advertising his book, Camp, Field and Prison Life (his experiences on Johnson’s Island). On the top of the advertising page, is an ad for the Medical History of Johnson’s Island by none other than Col. Steedman, M.D.! Three nice items for the Johnson’s Island or medical collector.
