Confederate General Richard S. Ewell Writes his Condolences on the Death of
One of His Former Personal Scouts who Died Fighting with Mosby!

War-date ALS of Confederate General Richard Ewell as Lieut. General.  He is sending his condolence on the death of Norman Smith – who used to be in the Black Horse Cavalry, then Scout and Guide for Ewell and finally rode with the “Grey Ghost”, John S. Mosby and was killed in action:
 

                                                                                                                        “Richmond, Va. 
                                                                                                                    Augst. 30th, 1864

                                                    I wish to testify to the bravery and zeal of Norman 
                                       Smith for a long time Private in the Black Horse company 
                                      but attached as Scout & Guide to my Head Quarters – Lieut. 
                                      in Mosby’s command when killed in action – One of many 
                                      sons of whom Fauquier may well be proud.

In the book Mosby’s Rangers, there are dozens of references to Norman Smith – he was not your common soldier but a real hero!  This letter with its Mosby connection should retail at $4,200-4,500.
