CS Broadside: General Wheeler Thanks His Troops

Here is a beautiful 8 x 10 ½ inch broadside – printed to be distributed and posted in the different companies of his famous Cavalry Corps.  The content is fantastic… so be sure to read it in its entirety!  Dated December 31, 1864 from “Head Quarters, Cavalry Corps.”, Wheeler starts out…

            “My brave Soldiers:

The close of the year terminates a campaign of eight months, during which you have engaged in continuous and successful fighting.

From Dalton to Atlanta you held the right of our army.  Opposed almost continuously by a force of infantry ten times your number, you repulsed every assault, inflicting upon the enemy a loss in killed and wounded numerically greater than your entire strength.  Every attempt on the part of the enemy to turn or strike our right flank was met and repulsed by your valor and determined courage…”

“…I desire, my brave soldiers, to thank you for your gallantry, devotion and good conduct.  Every charge I have asked you to make, has been brilliantly executed.  Every position I have asked you to hold has been held until absolutely untenable.  Your devotion to your country fills my heart with gratitude.  You have done your full duty to your country and to me; and I have tried to do my full duty to you.  Circumstances have forced upon you many and great deprivations.  You have been deprived of the issues of clothing and many of the comforts and conveniences which other troops have enjoyed and have born all without murmur.

Soldiers of Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas and Arkansas!  you deserve special commendation for your sacrifices and fortitude.  Separated from your homes and families you have nobly done all that gallant devoted men could do.  Soldiers from Alabama and Georgia! your homes have nearly all been overrun and destroyed, yet without complaint you have stood to your colors like brave and patriotic men.  Your country and your God will one day reward you…”

“…Another campaign will soon open in which I only ask you to fight with the same valor I have always seen you exhibit upon the many fields where you determined courage has won victory for our cause…”

This broadside would look great framed up with a picture of Wheeler and his Cavalry!  We have seen this particular broadside sell in excess of $700, but we have priced ours extremely reasonable!
