CDV Antietam Hero Lowell

Charles Russell Lowell, nephew of the famous poet, was a Harvard grad first fighting in the U.S. Cavalry and then on the staff of General McClellan during the battle of Antietam.  “Lowell displayed such gallantry while carrying orders under fire and rallying broken troops that he was chosen to carry the captured Confederate battle flags to Washington” (Generals in Blue).  After Antietam, he organized and was Col. of the 2nd Mass. Cav., repelled Jubal Early’s raid on Washington and then fought under Sheridan in the Valley.  During his three years in the saddle, Lowell had 12 horses shot out from under him.  At Cedar Creek, his luck ran out, sustaining a mortal wound.  Upon Sheridan’s insistence, Lowell received a commission as Brigadier General on the day of the Cedar Creek battle (October 19, 1864).  The CDV is in excellent condition with sharp corners.  The view is of Lowell seated holding his cap with Cav. insignia visible.  The photographer is Black & Case of Boston.  A very rare and desirable CDV!
