One of the most heart rendering stories of the Mexican War is that of the death of Major John R. Vinton. We found a story about his heroics and death and have scanned that information be sure to read about his exploits. On the last page of the story following his death it stated, “Upon his body were found letters from his children, stained with his life-blood, which flowed from a wound from his breast.” Amazingly in purchasing a group of Mexican War letters, we came across the blood stained grouping that the old Mexican War book spoke of. In unquestionable ink of the period, Vinton’s Mother has written on the letters “Boston May 8th 1847, this letter with others from his children was found on the person of my blessed son when he was slain at the Siege of Vera Cruz in Mexico, March 22nd 5 o’clock pm 1847. It bears a portion of his life’s blood – written by his disconsolate Mother.” The letters are as follows: The main letter is from his children’s teacher concerning the costs of their private education. This is the letter that Vinton’s Mother has inscribed. Next, there are two letters in fair, but readable condition from the two children. Perhaps, the most amazing historical grouping we have encountered!
